Abstract: | The primary object of our study is to bring two strands of research together: These are, on the one hand, the question why and how much people donate to charity organizations, and, on the other hand, the question how (potential) donors are affected by cues and signals sent by charity organizations. Previous research on charitable giving (at the individual level) mostly refers on the concept of “altruism” without distinguishing between different causes to donate (Schokkert 2006; Havens et al., 2006). In our study we argue that there is not one single type of donor, but instead we suppose different types of donors. Referring on Max Weber’s theory of social action (Weber, 1976) we distinguish between (1) instrumentally rational; (2) valuerational; (3) traditional and (4) affectual (emotional) types of donors. Additionally, charity organizations send different cues and signals to potential donors to receive attention and trustworthiness, e.g. visual signals through print or broadcast media, transparency signals, or signals of social norms and values. In our study we explore the link between different organizational cues and signals and their potential to motivate different types of donors (Kottasz 2003; Bennett & Barkensjo 2005). Thus, we expect that different types of donors perceive different organizational signals as causes to donate. |
