dc.description.abstract | As cognitive translation studies gains increasing momentum within the overarching purview of translation studies, there has been – quite rationally – a growing interest in actual and potential interfaces with the broader field of cognitive linguistics. Puzzingly, however, it is only to a relatively limited extent that cognitive or conceptual metaphor, generally regarded as a keystone of cognitive linguistics, has been the subject of various theoretical deliberations in cognitive translation studies and the object of empirical translation process research. This is despite the fact that a number of product-oriented studies embracing cognitive/conceptual metaphor in translation have been undertaken and that some researchers have been signaling the manifest potential of investigating the actual human processes by which source-language and source-text domain mapping is realized in target-text production. The question becomes all the more relevant as segments of the translation profession seek to re-position themselves by focusing on the added value of human translation that inter alia deep intercultural intervention offers. This talk will therefore address some pieces in the puzzle of conceptual metaphor in translation from the perspective of translation process research. After reviewing a selection of the studies that have been undertaken in this and closely related fields, it will consider not only the possibilities and prospective applications, but also some specific issues and wider problems of doing research at the promising, though complex, interface of translation processes and conceptual metaphor. After all, as Raymond Gibbs pertinently remarked, researching (conceptual) metaphor poses a puzzle that has set many a scholar’s head spinning. | de_CH |
