Abstract: What is the role of hate speech in the world of journalism? What is the role of journalism against hate speech? And how should and can journalism and journalists deal with hate speech? This article shows that in the context of new information technologies and the digitization of journalism, hate speech is relevant for journalism and journalists for several reasons; it affects the fundamental function and purpose of the media. Finally, to counter hate speech, journalism and journalists must be aware that hate speech is a highly relevant issue for them, and to counter it requires not only adequate resources and skills, but also a re-thinking of long-held standards and norms.
