To sense, observe and interpret symptoms of persons with dementia is very challenging especially during the last three months of their life. The difficulties lie in their restricted capacity to communicate, irregular transitions from a chronic-stable to an acute-critical symptom course but also in the slow but continuous degradation process. The aim of this literature review by Torraco was to identify nursing home bound dementia patients’ symptoms and symptoms’ quality and frequency in the last three months of their lives. The electronic databases Medline ®, Cinahl®, PsycINFO® and Cochrane Library were searched in German and English from 2000 to July 2012 with the keywords “dementia”, “nursing home”, “palliative care” and “symptoms”. 23 studies were included and six symptoms were identified as frequent and common in the end-of-life phase of people with dementia in nursing homes: Dyspnoea, pain, mood disorder, restricted mobility, restricted food and drink intake, behaviour and psychosocial symptoms (BPSD). The BPSD are often combined with agitation, restlessness and disorientation. Knowledge of atypical symptom manifestation in persons’ with dementia is absolutely necessary for the selection of interventions and effectively symptom management.
