Abstract: The importance of wind energy as a promising renewable energy source is growing continuously. With the costs of wind turbines steadily declining, technical reliability has increased – even in regions with lower wind speeds. However, variability, public acceptance and grid reliability still limit wind energy’s market penetration. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach to the implementation of wind energy is suggested, in which the key issues will be addressed. The central question of acceptance should not be analysed without taking into account technical, engineering and economic aspects of wind energy plants. Besides, optimizing the wind turbine site is a precondition for an efficient energy production. The set-up of the small-scale wind turbine contest (http://www.aufwind-goms.ch/) running from 2012-2013 in the Swiss energy region Goms, an alpine valley on 1300m a.s.l., is being used to apply the interdisciplinary research approach to the implementation of wind energy. Research questions comprise technical aspects (noise, efficiency, operation by severe weather conditions, such as snow fall, cold, storm), economical aspects as well as societal questions on the acceptance in a specific environment (tourist region). Innovative solutions are expected through the optimization of potential sites as well as in the refinement of applied research methods. Basic information for the understanding and analysis of public acceptance as well as for geographic/ meteorological, technical and economic possibilities for new (small-scale) wind turbines shall be assessed. Furthermore, win-win situations shall be illustrated, which allow for a socially compatible increase of renewable energy supply. The analysis and discussion of first results from acceptance surveys demonstrated that local stakeholders and tourists classify wind power projects in alpine regions as sustainable undertakings, if they perform a substantial, economically reasonable contribution to the energy supply and if they are well integrated in the regional landscape.
