Abstract: The presentation focuses on 17 case studies from a major investigation of journalistic writing in print, radio, TV, and online news offices in Switzerland and on the strategies used by journalists to ensure that their text product is dramaturgically effective in terms of text function, meaning, structure, and language variant. The questions addressed are: what decisions journalists make as they are writing; what strategies they use; how aware they are of those strategies; and what differences there are between experienced and inexperienced writers.
