Abstract: | Background: Many elderly live in nursing homes due to frailty and depend on hand-on care by nurses in their activities of daily living. Nolan’s relationship-centered model suggests that everyday life has to be shaped in meaningful ways. Sharing activities increase knowing the other and help build mutual respect. Therefore, means to create more reciprocal daily activities were sought to help build relationship amongst nurses and nursing home residents. Methods: Using participatory action research, nurse scientists, environmental scientists and two nursing homes collaborated to develop and implement interventions with plants for nursing home residents and nurses. Subsequently, nurses and nursing home residents were instructed to care for indoor plants together and to maintain the indoor decoration of the nursing home. Results: Fifteen interventions with plants were developed which all could be performed indoors, be it in the residents’ private or shared rooms. Residents as well as nurses were highly satisfied to be able to contribute to everyday life in the nursing home. Preliminary results show a decrease in pain levels amongst the elderly and more active participation. However, there was neither an improvement in quality of life nor a reduction of sleep problems. Conclusion: Interventions that are included in everyday life and help to create meaningful activities within nursing homes might be beneficial for residents and nurses alike. |
