Abstract: The Social Return on Investment (SROI) attempts to measure socio-economic returns by linking positive value created for society to costs avoided because of an intervention. In principle SROI is an appropriate and distinguished instrument of performance and sustainability measurement for a whole range of social purpose organisations. However, an oversimplified interpretation of impact tends to produce substantial comparability and legitimacy problems. In this article we show how the capabilities as well as the deficiencies could be addressed by promoting an integrated version of SROI. The latter can not only help assess individual initiatives, but also conceptualise and fathom the impact of large service providers (networks) located in developed welfare regimes.
