Abstract: The spatial dynamics of herbivores in agroecosystems gains importance when slowly acting pest management tools are employed. Knowledge on dispersal of many herbivores is very limited as yet. Such investigations require the development of technologies which allow simultaneous measurement of relevant dispersal parameters in a high number of individuals. Data gained by this approach allow us to forecast certain behaviours of the herbivores in the field. This will be developed for the case study of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella. The flight capacity of this herbivore was quantified by means of a computer linked flight device as a function of sex, age, and mating status. Field strains from different habitats were compared with respect to their flight behaviour. The implications of these findings for the field situation are discussed.
