Abstract: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used in biotechnology to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying fluid flow in a great variety of process equipment, e.g. for fluid flow characterisation in bioreactors. This enables the reduction of resource-intensive prototyping, since CFD is used to determine optimal process conditions in silico. Typical process engineering investigations for bioreactors are mixing time, power input as well as shear and normal stress. Most of the biopharmaceutical production processes are accomplished with aerobe cells, and thus the process relies on sufficient gas mass transfer to supply enough oxygen to the culture broth, which has a considerable influence on cell growth and product yield. In recent years, CFD models have increasingly been coupled with population balance models (PBM) to calculate the gas bubble size distribution through breakup and coalescence. This coupling allows the simulation of oxygen distribution in polydisperse systems, like aerated bioreactors. This presentation shows recent developments in modelling bubble size distribution and gas mass transfer.
