Forest bathing and forest therapy are enjoying increasing popularity. In Japan, forest bathing, known as “shinrin yoku”, is an integral part of the health system. According to studies, spending time in the forest can improve heart activity, breathing and the activity of the nervous system. The climate of the forest and the terpenes released by the trees can have a positive effect on stress symptoms, sleep disorders, depression and attention deficit disorders. Mindfulness exercises based on various sensory perceptions are used preventively and rehabilitatively. The method, originally from Japan, has now also found its way to Europe. In Switzerland, this new field is now being developed through training opportunities. Whereas forests for health promotion have already been developed in Germany, studies on the topic of forest therapy and therapeutic forests are still pending in Switzerland. |
