Due to constant changes and growing complexity in their environment, today's organizations are increasingly using projects to respond to these fast changes. Project-oriented organizations, through their strategic focus on management by projects and organizational alignment with projects, are able to leverage characteristics that enable them to cope with this multitude of variety. In the sense of a cybernetic systemic view, coping with variety means to successfully manage and control variety, hence, to be viable. However, project-oriented organizations have not yet been investigated in terms of viability. In this paper, we show how project-oriented organizations can be enriched by viable characteristics, drawing from the Viable Systems Model, established by Stafford Beer in 1984. By developing a Conceptual Framework of viable and project-oriented Organizations, we show how viability can influence the competencies of project-oriented organizations by proposing three propositions. To this end, we operationalize Beer's Viable Systems Model to make it more applicable, moving beyond its abstractness. With this paper we contribute to an increased understanding of organizational viability and to an enrichment of project-oriented organizations. In doing so, we make a contribution to understanding how companies can leverage the increasing variety of their organizational environment.de_CH
