Organic cereal production in the Grisons mountains in eastern Switzerland is an example of innovative diversification of agricultural production. Despite the difficult growing conditions, farmers used their pioneering spirit, the available space and synergies with animal husbandry to establish a very successful organic mountain cereal brand in Switzerland some 30 years ago. This work - studied in the framework of the H2020 MOVING project - explores the drivers and barriers that influence cereal production in the Swiss Alps, ensuring that the value chain persists in a way that supports the well-being of the natural area and its inhabitants. These drivers of change are identified by analysing historical and current data on production areas, agricultural policies and social networks. Then, actors’ different perceptions thereof are examined. From this, it is deduced how production decisions are influenced by perceptions and how best to respond to threats or opportunities for mountain grain production.de_CH
