Abstract: Deliberative democracy has faced criticism with regard to its possible application to business, on the basis that deliberation can be misused in order to disseminate an ideology, to divert attention from genuine debates or to strengthen the power of certain people. We suggest that Aristotle’s ethics of deliberation can mitigate these ethical risks, and can serve as the basis for a new perspective on deliberative democracy in business. A comprehensive common good perspective based on Aristotelian deliberation reveals the relevance of (i) both, individual and collective deliberation, promoting a virtuous, meaningful and authentic reflection that escapes ideological conditioning, (ii) deliberation on both, the ends and the means that facilitates a transcendental and rooted reflection, and (iii) deliberation that is both, open to a plurality of profiles and open to a plurality of ways of pursuing the common good and thus prevents instrumentalization of power by the strongest. We contribute to the emergence of a dynamic perspective on deliberation by identifying the different steps in the deliberative process and discuss how this can contribute to business sustainability and responsibility."
