Abstract:	Modal expressions in legal texts are important indicators of various norm types such as ordering, prohibition or permission. Beside this semantic aspect, there is a pragmatic one as well: since the same norm can be uttered in various speech acts, modal expressions indicate the way in which lawmakers communicate with their subjects, hence reflecting different perspectives. Previous studies in Old Nordic legal texts analysed the semantic and syntactic functions of the expressions without being aware of the broad variety of norm types and the pragmatic function of the expressions. This paper studies the modal expressions of Scanian Law in relation to norm types and speech acts and gives further insights into the use of modal expressions in Scanian Law.
