dc.description.abstractThe Climate Duel is an international competition with the aim of motivating employees and students to adopt climate-friendly behaviour. The competition took place for the first time in 2021 and was designed as part of a digital university cooperation. One goal of the project was to find out to what extent gamification can be effective in promoting environmentally friendly behaviour. University members were asked to participate in challenges with CO2-saving opportunities that could be implemented on campus or in everyday life. The challenges aimed to get participants to try out and, in the best case, maintain certain new behaviours within a set time frame. The savings achieved during a challenge were communicated to the participants of the climate duel after the challenge was completed. In this way, they experienced the immediate effectiveness of their actions. In a final survey, the participants stated that they had acquired knowledge about the climate relevance of everyday actions and wanted to integrate new environmentally friendly behaviours into their everyday lives after completing the challenge. The gamification approach in the framework of the climate duel thus successfully promoted sustainable action. The implementation of the climate duel was designed in the sense of a university ESD in such a way that the acquisition of design competences was promoted. In total, greenhouse gas emissions in the amount of 2.3 tonnes of CO2-eq were saved during the climate duel pilot project with 375 participants from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). This pilot project was followed by a second edition of the climate duel with students and staff from all 8 departments of the ZHAW who competed against each other over a period of 7 weeks in 2023. In 14 different challenges, they aimed to save as much CO2 as possible in everyday life. The challenges reached from drinking tap water instead of buying soft drinks in plastic bottles, to eating a vegan meal for lunch, to refrain from streaming movies in the evening, and booking camping holidays in the region instead of hotel holidays by the sea. To analyse the saved greenhouse gas emissions and other live cycle indicators, life cycle inventory models for each of the 14 challenges were established and combined with specific data on the behaviour of the participants before and during the challenge. Regarding tap water for example, 13% of the participants stated that they usually buy mineral water in disposable PET, while 77% said they did not buy any mineral water. The rest bought reusable PET or glass. On average, mineral water was replaced by tap water on 5.8 days during the challenge period, saving 290 kg CO2-eq. The most CO2 savings were achieved with the challenge "Eat Vegan". However, the challenge "Drink Tap Water" had the highest participation rate. The savings in GHG emissions are based on the measured quantity, which was communicated to the participants after the end of a challenge. The ultimate winner of the duel is the climate.
