Abstract: It is a frequently observed phenomenon that serial verbs are prone to reanalysis (i.e. changing of grammatical category). In African linguistics, for instance, there has been a lenghty debate on whether certain serial verbs have undergone reanalysis as prepositions. Reinterpretation of the verb ‘give’ as a valence increasing device which adds a recepient/benefactive to the verb frame is particularly frequent and occurs for instance widely in the New Guinea area, as for example shown for Abelam by Laycock or for Awtuw by Feldman (1983). Similar phenomena are also attested from South-East Asia (e.g. Clark (1978)). A possibly unique type of reanalysis of serial verbs has occured in Imonda and some other closely related members of the same family. In these languages some serial verbs have undergone reanalysis as noun-classifying verbal prefixes. The purpose of this paper is to describe this unusual type of noun-classification system and to throw some light on how it may have arisen.
