Abstract: Background: Researchers have proposed the health value chain concept to improve the overall quality, speed and cost effectiveness of healthcare systems. A key objective is to optimize the interaction processes between the actors. This optimization can only be achieved through collaborations between the actors. This paper focuses on assessing the perceived interorganizational collaboration quality between Swiss hospitals and health insurance providers and assessing its influencing intra-organizational factors. Methodology: A conceptual framework is proposed to understand the following three antecedents of perceived Quality of Collaboration: Proficiency, Willingness and Empowerment. Subsequently, hypotheses are developed based on this conceptual model and tested using a survey conducted with 60 Swiss hospital and health insurance employees. Findings: The results from a regression analysis provide support for our hypotheses on intra-organizational readiness factors; high levels of perceived Proficiency, Willingness and Empowerment tend to be related to higher levels of the perceived Quality of Collaboration. While the readiness level among our survey participants is high for the Willingness construct, the other two dimensions show major improvement potential. Practical Implications: This paper derives recommendations to improve the three readiness dimensions Proficiency, Willingness and Empowerment. This improvement is key because those three dimensions have a major influence on the perceived quality of their collaboration initiatives. Research Implication: A more quantitative performance approach should be developed to assess the outcome quality of collaboration in health value chains.
