Abstract: A high precision time base is especially important for distributed systems in automation. The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) specified in IEEE 1588 is able to synchronize distributed clocks with an accuracy of less than one microsecond. It is adapted to local area networks such as Ethernet which allow Multicast messages. The demands on the local clocks and the network and computing capacity are comparatively low.
