dc.description.abstractThe tremendous progress of NMT in the last few years has not only shaken the translation professions, it has also changed the world for lay users. Freely available NMT systems such as DeepL and Google Translate have found their way into many of our daily routines. They offer a wide range of new possibilities for communication, but they also hide some potential for miscommunication and other risks (Nurminen, 2019). While the implications for translators and translation students are being investigated and recommendations have been made in the literature, the use of NMT by other communication professionals has not yet become the centre of attention. This paper presents an action research project made possible by the integration of an NMT literacy class within a larger course on applied linguistics for future journalists, communication experts, and language teachers. All students attended a one-off lecture and seminar on machine translation, focussing on its potential and risks for language professionals (O’Brien & Ehrensberger-Dow, 2020). Before and after the classes, they were asked to complete a short questionnaire about their awareness of NMT-related risks and problems. In addition, focus group discussions afterwards with representatives from the three specialisations provided insights into the students' perceptions of MT with respect to potential bias, trust, influence on creativity and awareness of other cross-linguistic issues. By addressing students, we would like to illustrate the potential of instituting future changes in practices of language professionals and at the same time explore the influence of MT literacy (Bowker & Buitrago Ciro, 2019) on metalinguistic awareness.de_CH
