Abstract: The paper to be presented is based on the Suisse research project ‘Interpreting in Medical Settings: Roles, Requirements and Responsibility’, which was supported by a grant of the Suisse Commission for Technology and Innovation (KTI) and carried out by an interdisciplinary team comprising medical specialists from the University Hospital of Basel (especially Marina Sleptsova) and interpreting studies/applied linguistics researchers from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) (especially Gertrud Hofer). It explores 19 transcribed video-taped interpreted authentic conversations between German speaking doctors/medial staff and patients of Turkish or Albanian origin. The analysis finds that culture-specific expressions occur rarely and do not pose any interpreting problems. By contrast, phatic tokens play an important role in medical personnel’s presentation of their interactional, confidence building, diagnostic and therapeutic intentions, but are hardly ever rendered by the interpreters. From a conference interpreting perspective it can be argued that, while the medical interpreters have good reason not to render such expressions, it is still a sign of lack of professionalism on their part.
