dc.description.abstractPrivate car mobility with fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to negative externalities such as CO2 emissions, noise, congestion and accidents. Hence, while from a sustainability point of view it is evident that in the long-term mobility needs to shift towards a stronger use of public transport, to trigger this transition in the short-term it will also be necessary to find measures for steering car-savvy households towards more environmentally friendly solutions. Particularly, it is important to motivate car-savvy households not only to switch to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) fuelled with renewable electricity but also to buy smaller cars, which are sufficient for everyday trips. Common measures to support such shifts are subsidies on the purchase price of BEVs and the installation of charging stations, particularly at home and workplaces. However, no study investigated the potential rebound effects such measures might trigger for households currently living car-free and which so far have shown no intention of buying a car. Subsidies and other supporting measures might increase the likelihood that these households reconsider their mobility lifestyle and buy a car instead of living car-free. We investigated this hypothesis by analysing purchase choices of Swiss car-free households through a multiple price list choice experiment including two different treatment groups and one control group. One treatment corresponds to an increase in the possibilities of charging a BEV at home and at work. The second treatment corresponds to a higher availability of carsharing services. Within the price list, we included a subsidy ranging from 0 CHF to 8’000 CHF. This allowed us to derive the impact such measures and increases in subsidy could have on car-free mobility lifestyles choices. The results support policy planners and mobility experts in evaluating potential rebound effects stemming from supportive measures in the realm of sustainable mobility.de_CH
