Abstract: Introduction: To address growing health care costs, there is a shift from prolonged inpatient stroke rehabilitation to early discharge with a greater emphasis on outpatient and home-based therapy. Technology-based home exercise programs play a meaningful part in the rehabilitation process to enable a higher number of repetitions but require adaption to the needs of patients after stroke and therapists. As part of a larger research project to develop a technology-based home exercise program for stroke rehabilitation, we must determine the reasons for current behaviors, needs and experiences regarding these programs. Objectives: The aim of this research project is to identify the behaviors, needs and experiences of therapists and experts with regards to technology-based home-based therapy in outpatient stroke rehabilitation in Switzerland and beyond. Methods: In this ongoing study, we use a qualitative research approach that includes three online focus groups with a total of 16 therapists and experts from different disciplines. Data will be collected in March 2023 and analyze through content analysis. Results: Preliminary results suggest that therapists use both function-based and occupation-focused wearable technology tools for home exercise program. The decision on which tool to use is based on the patient’s skills, own experience, and recommendations from other experts. There is a high need for therapists to adapt the tools to the individual needs of patients after stroke. Conclusion: Preliminary results indicate that a variety of home exercise programs exist, but the applications often do not meet the needs and skills of patients after stroke and cannot be customized as desired. This leads to non-use of existing tools. To overcome this issue, therapists and experts suggest involving the target group in the development process and providing recommendations for use after stroke.
