Introduction: Illness is a family affair. When healthcare professionals work in a systemic way, patient and family outcomes improve. However, the fast-paced clinical routine leaves little time to develop skills in family systems care (FSC) at an interprofessional level. Students claim, universities do not teach applicable FSC theories. To bridge this gap, a University of Applied Science University of Applied Science has set the goal of integrating practice, teaching, and research. Aim & Objectives: An interprofessional group of experts aims to set up a Family Systems Care Unit (FSCU) in the sense of a real-live lab in which families can receive counseling from experts and students can learn from real-life situations. Methods: Using a co-creating team approach, at FSCU a structured interprofessional team process has been developed. Findings/Outcomes: A structured process with pre- and post-sessions around family counseling have proven to be a successful learning setting for students and experts alike. The interprofessional cooperation in the team of experts has promoted a common understanding of family-systemic counseling and has had a positive influence on quality. The first 4 years have shown that the counseling offered meet an urgent need of families. Discussion/Conclusion: The FSCU makes a useful and effective contribution to competence development in FSC. Advanced practitioners (APs) are needed in all healthcare professions and APs need FSC competencies to achieve improved and sustainable outcomes and to alleviate suffering of patients and families. Implication(s) for Practice: The next step is scaling up student learning opportunities at the FSCU.de_CH
