This paper reports on a research project into L2 written English production conducted with and among students of translation at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur. Applying a range of text-grammatical and lexical-cohesive measures derived principally from Werlich (1982), Hoey (1991) and Halliday (1994), the project aimed to establish textual indicators and degrees of unnaturalness in non-native English output written under identical examination conditions by German and Italian native-speaker groups. For purposes of comparison, texts were generated under similar conditions by a control group of native English students at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur, and the University of Alberta, Canada. The results show interesting differences in the way native and non-native speakers use English at textual level, suggesting that text-linguistic criteria provide important means of analyzing naturalness and that the consistent application of such criteria in teaching L2 English could improve natural written expression, especially for advanced users.de_CH
