As international communication management gains momentum and translation acquires an increasingly strategic function in, the intercultural mediation inherent in translators’ work makes them well-positioned to play an integral part in assessing and assuring output quality in international, multilingual corporate communications. However, dedicated quality standards for translation service provision envisage only restricted feed-forward and feedback interactions between translators and the organisations they work for. Moreover, evidence of translators’ self-concept shows them underequipped to adopt the evaluative, advisory and (co-)creative roles that meaningful cooperation with corporate communications specialists suggests. This paper reports on a pilot study conducted at the interface between translation and corporate communications in Switzerland. It presents findings from a questionnaire survey of more than 250 translators, project managers and communications specialists, triangulated with data from follow-up interviews and student evaluations of interdisciplinary projects aimed at integrating the two fields more closely. The results reveal unevenly developed feed-forward and evaluative feedback cultures across sectors, organisations and work profiles, together with an implicit perception of translators’ roles that underplays the adaptive value-added of human translation as creative intercultural mediation). The implications for quality assessment and assurance as well as translator education and professional development are discussed, with recommendations made for future interdisciplinary R&D.de_CH
