Abstract: Lecturers’ ability to manage EMI classroom settings is a key component for quality assurance of international programmes in higher education. One method of evaluating lecturers’ readiness for EMI is by means of classroom observation and assessment by experts who are specifically trained in EMI. However, as the central stakeholders in education, the perspectives of students are also an essential component in the assessment of lecturer skills. This study examines student reactions to live English-taught lectures for two purposes. The first is to provide validation evidence for criteria used in the EMI-trained-rater assessment of lecturing quality. The quality parameters in question were developed within the project “Internationalisation of Universities of Applied Sciences” (see also Studer, this volume). The second purpose is to develop a pool of empirically-based student feedback questionnaire items for use in EMI settings. Student-specific data was found to support the inclusion of linguistic, communicative and didactic analytic categories for both trained-rater assessment and student feedback tools.
